DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY - NIGHT LIGHTS

During our DT week, we have been investigating 'Night lights' and how they are made. During this project, we have:
  • Learned about the dangers of electricity and explored building a variety of circuits.
  • Created a range of designs for a Night light lampshade.
  • Chosen a final design and created a 3D model of this design using a range of media.
  • Showcased our lampshades to the class using lightbulbs.

YEAR 4 VISIT TO LLANCAIACH FAWR

We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Stuarts this term. We have been learning about the Great Fire of London, The Great Plague and The Gunpowder plot.

A highlight of our topic was our trip to Llancaiach Fawr. We had a wonderful tour of the house, learning about the functions of each room. We made plague bags using, lavender, sage and mint. In the afternoon, we had a medicine workshop. During this workshop we had the opportunity to make lavender soap.

Friday 11 March 2016

Year 4 have been busy this DT week! We have learnt how to make a nightlight. Also we have done an electrical safety PowerPoint presentation, and we have made circuits. We went under the tables where it was dark and tested our nightlight with our circuits. Also, we made 3 different types of switches. They were made out of foil, split pins and paper clips. It was very fun! It was the best Year 4 DT week EVER!

Year 4 DT Week

This D.T week year 4 have been busy designing and making nightlights! We have learnt about electrical safety and we made PowerPoint presentations all about how to stay safe around electricity. We learnt how to make night lights and we looked at some lamp shades. We also played on the iPads, like on an app where you can make your own circuits. We also found lots of electrical DANGERS on a game on the computer! We all enjoyed it and look at some of the night lights that we made!

Monday 1 February 2016

This term Year 4 are studying the Stuarts!

On Thursday 21st January, Class 3 and Class 4 visited Llancaiach Fawr Manor. We were guided around the manor by Colonel Prichard's staff, it was like we had stepped back in time! We saw the great hall, the parlour, the bed chambers, the servant's hall and the kitchen. We learnt that people believed that the Great Plague was caused by bad smells so we even got to make our plague bags! We also took part in a workshop where we looked at children's lives in the seventeenth century and played some of the games that they would have played.

Have a look at some of our photos, and keep a look out for blogs written by the children!

Visit to Cilfynydd Welsh Water Education Centre

As part of our geography project 'Water Worlds', we were lucky enough to visit the Welsh Water Treatment Works at Cilfynydd on Friday 16th October.

We had a great day. We went to the River Taff and carried out an investigation on river flow! We also did a 'River Kick' study to find out which creatures were living in the river. This gave us an indication of the levels of pollution!

We also had a tour of the Waste Water Treatment Works! This was super interesting, if a little smelly!!

DT Week - Pop-up Books!

In the first half term we had our first DT Week in Year 4!
We investigated, designed, planned and made our own pop-up books!

We enjoyed folding the different pop-up mechanisms, such as the box fold, the mouth fold and the spring!

We were very proud of our pop-up books and enjoyed reading them to the children in year 3!
